Renewing the Mind

Updated: Feb 21, 2023

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is- His good, pleasing and perfect will.

The voice of this world is so loud and in our faces like I’ve never experienced. It knocks us down with feelings of helplessness, despair, and sadness. The total opposite of what the Lord gives.

He is the giver of all good things. He is the way, the truth, and the life. As I continued to seek God, memorize scripture, listen to sound preaching, and actually go to church(yay!), I noticed something. God’s voice and His Word, became louder than the world and my sense of unrest began to crumble and I knew that God was encouraging me to continuing pressing on. So I did. I’ve been looking up so much about renewing the mind and the need to take every thought captive. I think it is the key for us to continue to rise above what the world yells out. While googling “renewing the mind” one evening,  I came across a sermon by one of my favorite preachers, John Piper, and found this gem. As you listen,  I pray it will awaken within you hope and an understanding of the need to take every thought captive.

One thing he said was,“ Only our thoughts can create our emotions. So if our emotions are unhealthy we can be sure we have a thought that has not been taken captive. Thus the easiest way to realize a thought has not been taken captive is to write your unhealthy emotion down on paper and then begin the search for the thought that created the emotion that needs to be taken(the lie)that created the unhealthy emotion.”

I had to think on that for a minute! Once it sunk in, the truth of that has been so helpful for me because I need a plan...you know guidance for what action to take. As my pastor reminded me on Sunday...God’s Word is our sword. It’s our weapon against the evil one. It is what sheds the light on the lie that I believe causes me to sink into despair. So I have started to be more intentional with God’s Word and I’m going to keep researching how to renew my mind daily, keeping my eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of my soul. I want to share with you what God teaches me, because I know He will. He always meets us where we are when we ask Him. I’ll be praying that as I share what I find, that it to will help you be filled with joy and peace as you turn fully to Him. Together we will get through the bitter of these times with the sweet of the Word because we, dear friend, are more than conquers through Him who loves us! Be blessed sweet friends!
